Tahiti eye Polynesian Cup three-peat as Tonga set up rematch in Final

    Preview

Tahiti and Tonga are set for a rematch in the Final, while Samoa and Cook Islands battle for bronze.

TOAHOTU (Tahiti) - The stage is set for the conclusion of the FIBA Polynesian Cup 2026, with hosts Tahiti preparing to face Tonga in the Final, while Samoa and Cook Islands battle for bronze.

Tahiti, who are aiming for their third straight title, completed an unbeaten Group Phase campaign with four consecutive victories, including a hard-fought 98-87 win over Tonga earlier.

But Tonga have momentum of their own, closing their Group Phase campaign with a commanding 86-64 victory over American Samoa, led by an outstanding performance from Luke Sinisa.

Meanwhile, Samoa and Cook Islands delivered a dramatic preview of their Third-Place Game showdown, with Samoa edging a 70-66 thriller.

With medals and Pacific Games qualification opportunities at stake, the final day in Toahotu promises plenty of excitement.

Tonga make a statement ahead of the Final

Tonga left little doubt about their intentions in their final Group Phase appearance, cruising past American Samoa 86-64 to secure their place in the Final.

Luke Sinisa was at the heart of the victory, producing a dominant display of 19 points, 19 rebounds and 6 assists in less than 29 minutes of action.

The forward set the tone from the opening minutes, helping Tonga race out to a 12-0 lead before putting an exclamation mark on the performance with two emphatic dunks in the closing stages.

Riley Salesi Manu added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists, while Jimitose Foamotu Iosia Sipeli also scored 17 points. Sohrab Aziziyan provided another strong presence inside with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Tonga led for an astonishing 39 minutes and 49 seconds, never allowing American Samoa to move in front.

The result was the perfect response to their earlier 98-87 defeat against Tahiti, giving Tonga a timely confidence boost ahead of their rematch with the hosts.

Final Preview: Can Tonga end Tahiti's unbeaten run?

Tahiti have been the standout team of the tournament, winning all four Group Phase games and demonstrating their ability to dominate opponents as well as battle through difficult moments.

This should come to no surprise, as Tahiti are reigning back-to-back champions of the competition.

The hosts opened with a commanding 94-47 victory over American Samoa, before overturning a 16-point deficit to defeat Samoa 92-86. They followed that with a 103-74 triumph over Cook Islands and completed their unbeaten run with a 98-87 victory over Tonga.

Rahiti Tekarohi Raihel Tinirauarii has been central to that success.

The dynamic scorer has been virtually unstoppable, recording 19 points against American Samoa, 29 against Samoa and 34 against Cook Islands.

Against Tonga, he took his performances to another level.

Tinirauarii erupted for 37 points, connecting on an incredible 9 three-pointers from 13 attempts to lead Tahiti past their fellow finalists.

His explosive shooting display, including three triples early in the third quarter, proved decisive in a contest that remained competitive through the first half.

However, Tonga have already shown they possess the talent to challenge the hosts.

Marcus Alipate led their resistance in the previous meeting with 22 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists, while Tonga held a six-point advantage during the second quarter before Tahiti seized control.

With Sinisa, Manu, Alipate and Aziziyan all capable of making major contributions, Tonga will be confident of producing a stronger challenge in the rematch.

For Tahiti, containing Tonga's interior presence while maintaining their own offensive rhythm will be crucial.

For Tonga, the priority will be finding an answer for Tinirauarii's scoring while capitalizing on the balanced attack that has powered them throughout the competition.

Having already secured qualification for the Pacific Games 2027 as hosts, Tahiti now have their sights set on celebrating a championship in front of their home supporters - their third straight title.

Tonga, however, have one final opportunity to spoil the party.
