JEDDAH (Saudi Arabia) – The FIBA Asia Cup 2025 is fast approaching, bringing together national teams across Asia to celebrate the best of basketball.
Here’s everything you need to know before the tournament tips off:
What is the FIBA Asia Cup?
It is the premier and most prestigious basketball tournament for national teams in the various subzones of Asia and Oceania. The competition is held every four years and is organized by FIBA’s Regional Office in Asia.
How many editions have been played?
This will mark the 31st edition. The tournament was first held in 1960 in Manila, Philippines. The competition has seen 13 host countries across the decades, with China hosting the event six times (1989, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2015).
Where is this edition being played?
Saudi Arabia will be the host country for 2025, with Jeddah as host city. All the games will be staged at the King Abdullah Sports City from 5 to 17 August. This is the second time Saudi Arabia will host the event, having previously done so in 1997.

How did the teams qualify?
Pre-Qualifiers
The journey to the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 tipped off on June 22, 2022. 18 teams—those that either didn’t join or didn’t advance in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 qualifiers—competed in this stage. Their mission: claim one of eight coveted spots to advance to the next round.
Qualifiers
The eight advancing teams were joined by the 16 national squads that participated in the FIBA Asia Cup 2022, forming a 24-team pool. These teams were split evenly between the West and East regions, with each region divided into three groups of four.
In each group, the top two teams punched their ticket to the FIBA Asia Cup 2025. Meanwhile, the six third-placed teams moved on to the Final Qualifying Tournament.
Final Qualifying Tournament
The six remaining teams were drawn into two groups of three. In each group, the top two finishers earned the final four spots in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025.
What’s at stake?
The winner of this year’s tournament will earn the coveted title of FIBA Asia Cup 2025 champions—an honor to be held for the next four years, until the next edition in 2029. With the Asia Cup held only once every four years, this is the most prestigious crown in Asian basketball.

What is the competition format?
16 qualified teams will play in the group phase. They were drawn into four groups of four teams. Every group winner will gain direct access to the Quarter-Finals, while the second-place and third-place teams of each group will play in the Qualification to the Quarter-Finals.
The 16 participating teams are split into four groups:
Group A: Australia, Korea, Lebanon, Qatar Group B: Guam, Iran, Japan, Syria Group C: China, India, Jordan, Saudi Arabia Group D: Chinese Taipei, Iraq, New Zealand, Philippines

Who is the defending champion?
Australia enter the tournament as defending champions after beating Lebanon in the 2022 Final in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was the country’s second gold medal.
FIBA Asia Cup 2025 have ambassadors
Ali Al Maghrabi of Saudi Arabia and Sam Daghlas of Jordan are the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 ambassadors. FIBA selected two celebrated legends whose lasting impact extends beyond this tournament to the growth of basketball in their home countries—cementing their status as icons of the game.

Which players will compete?
Each team’s final 12-player roster will be confirmed after the technical meeting held before the start of the competition. However, a number of teams have already started announcing their preliminary squads.
