Group A preview: Brazil, USA favored to take top spot

    Preview

The reigning runner-up and the 2022 bronze medalist look solid to secure the two automatic Quarter-Final berths from this group.

MIAMI (United States) – FIBA AmeriCup 2025 is just days away, and after evaluating each of the teams competing in the tournament, it’s time to break down the groups.

We begin with Group A, which features the Bahamas, Brazil—the runner-up from the previous edition—Uruguay, and the United States, which captured bronze in 2022. The top two finishers will advance directly to the Quarter-Finals, while the third-place team could still qualify as one of the two best third-place teams overall. The last-place team will be eliminated.

Based on current form and pedigree, Brazil and the USA enter as the clear favorites to claim the top two spots in this group.

    Favorite: Brazil

Led by forward-center Bruno Caboclo and point guard Yago Santos, Brazil boasts one of the deepest rosters in the tournament. As many as seven players from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are expected to suit up. Backed by their rich tradition and four AmeriCup titles, the Brazilians have strong chemistry after years of playing together internationally. They also carry extra motivation following their loss in the 2022 Final on home soil.

    Underdog: Bahamas

The Bahamas took a hit with the injury to big man Kai Jones, who will miss the competition. Still, the team has talent and plenty of athleticism. While it will be tough to go against Brazil and the USA, their physicality could give them a shot against Uruguay.

    Key matchup: USA vs. Brazil

Barring any surprises, this clash on August 26 should decide the group winner. Both teams are strong title contenders, and this matchup will serve as an early measuring stick. Brazil’s depth and chemistry give them a slight edge, but the Americans counter with a group of seasoned veterans who will play with intensity and won’t go down easily.

The question: Can Uruguay pull off an upset?

Uruguay comes in on a high note after convincing tune-up wins against Colombia and Venezuela. The team showed solid execution, but it’s hard to see them troubling Brazil or the United States. Their most realistic chance is against the Bahamas, though that will be no easy task given the Caribbean side’s athleticism. Uruguay’s perimeter play, led by captain Bruno Fitipaldo, remains its main strength.
