MIAMI (United States) – The countdown to the start of the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 is on. We’re just a couple of weeks away from tip-off, and we’re ready to experience the excitement of the premier and most prestigious national team tournament in the Americas. National pride is on the line, and only one team will earn the honor of being crowned champions of the continent.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the tournament:
How many times has the AmeriCup been played?
This will be the 20th edition of the tournament. It was first held in 1980 in Puerto Rico. It took place every two years from 1993 to 2017, and then the current global competition system was introduced, including Qualifiers for continental championships and World Cups. The tournament returned in 2022 and will now be held every four years starting with the 2025 edition. To learn more about the international competition system for national teams, click here.
Where is this edition being held?
The host country is Nicaragua, which is staging the tournament for the first time in its history. All games will be played in the capital city, Managua, at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello, from August 22 to 31.

The top 12 teams in the Americas, for this edition it will be the following: Argentina (20 appearances, including this one) Bahamas (2) Brazil (20) Canada (20) Colombia (3) Dominican Republic (15) Nicaragua (1) Panama (14) Puerto Rico (20) Uruguay (19) United States (12) Venezuela (18)
How did they qualify?
Through three qualifying windows held in February 2024, November 2024, and February 2025. Sixteen national teams competed, divided into four groups of four. The top three teams from each group secured their spots in the AmeriCup. Nicaragua qualified automatically as the host nation. What’s the competition format?
The 12 participating teams are divided into three groups: Group A: Brazil, Bahamas, Uruguay, United States Group B: Canada, Panama, Puerto Rico, Venezuela Group C: Argentina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua
In the Group Phase, each team will play one game against every other team in its group.
The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-place teams, will advance to the Quarter-Finals.
The eight quarterfinalists will be seeded from 1 to 8 based on their performance in the Group Phase.
The winners of the Quarter-Finals will move on to the Semi-Finals, where they will compete for a spot in the Gold Medal Game.
Who is the defending champion?
Argentina won the title at the 2022 edition held in Brazil, defeating the host team in the Final. It was Argentina’s third gold medal, tying Puerto Rico, and trailing only the United States (7 titles) and Brazil (4 titles).
