ATHENS (Greece) - Panathinaikos A.C had the backing of one of the highest EuroCup Women attendances of all-time when they faced MB Zaglebie Sosnowiec in a Round of 16 second leg game on Wednesday night.
The Greek side have already been touted as one of the frontrunners to be crowned EuroCup Women champions this season, and that hype was turned up another level with 7,829 fans stepping out to show their support.
The figure is not only the third highest in history, but also the highest ever outside of a Final.
Taking place inside the Telekom Center in Athens, those present didn't get to see a home victory. However, they did see a blockbuster contest as the Polish visitors clinched a 94-93 success, but Panathinaikos still breezed into the Quarter-Finals courtesy of their substantial first leg victory.
Panathinaikos Head Coach, Selen Erdem stated: "Tonight, what we experienced was something magical, and I hope that others involved in women's basketball competitions will get to experience it too. These fans in this arena are something indescribable."
Only two larger crowds have watched a EuroCup Women game came - with Kayseri hosting WBC Dynamo in in front of 11,000 fans during the 2012-13 campaign and 8,000 supporters cheering on Galatasaray when they faced Umana Reyer Venezia in the 2017-18 season.
