TUR - Galatasaray Odeabank sign off historic season in style

ISTANBUL (TKBL/FIBA World Championship for Women) - A euphoric outpouring of jubilation and emotion cascaded around the Adbi Ipekci Arena as Galatasaray Odeabank wrapped up the most successful season in their history thanks to several stars who will be heading for the FIBA World Championship for Women later this year.

In front of a reported crowd of almost 14,000 triumphant supporters, head coach Ekrem Memnun and his side finally ended a 13 year drought as they landed the Turkish Championship once again to complete an amazing campaign.

To make what was a very special occasion taste even sweeter, they swept past Fenerbahce in style after taking a 73-54 victory in the deciding contest of the five game series, simultaneously bringing the painful eight year domination of their arch rivals to an end.

Following on from their Turkish Cup success and most notably a historic first EuroLeague Women title, Galatasaray produced a scintillating start and never looked back.

Storming into a 17-3 advantage in the opening minutes, they soon took their lead out to 20 points with the kind of display and opening salvo which was reminiscent of their success at the Final Eight in Ekaterinburg.

Revelling in the agony of their opponents who went down by as many as 32 points at one stage, Galatasary were able to coast to a glorious silverware treble.

Once again it was Alba Torrens who repaid the significant investment made in her with another influential performance. The wing star top scored with 21 points, while Spanish national team colleague Sancho Lyttle recorded a memorable double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Turkish legend Nevriye Yilmaz has spent most of her career winning titles with Fenerbahce, but continued building her personal collection of championships on the other side of the Bosphorus strait this time as she added 15 points.

Isil Alben was hugely instrumental in reaching the top of the EuroLeague Women podium and she also pulled the strings once again to great effect.

It was particularly hard to take for the Turkish national team players wearing a Fenerbahce vest and not least the likes of Birsel Vardarli, Quanitra Hollingsworth and Esmeral Tuncluer.

Having been down 2-0 in the series, Fenerbahce had given themselves real hope by levelling maters with two successive victories.

But, a rotten shooting display proved costly and Galatasaray proved unstoppable on the night, as they provided their fans with a landmark season which certainly won't be forgotten in a hurry.
