BRA - Zanon outlines roster for Canadian mission

RIO DE JANEIRO (FIBA South American Championship for Women/FIBA World Championship for Women) - Brazil head coach Luiz Augusto Zanon is ready to continue the journey towards the 2016 Olympics when he takes an experimental team to Canada to play three games which will serve as essential preparation for both the FIBA South American Championship for Women and the FIBA World Championship for Women.

While most of his peers are solely focused on the action in Turkey later this year, it's perhaps inevitable that as hosts of the Rio Games in two years time, the event continues to be at the forefront of Brazilian minds, with Zanon no exception.

"It's still the beginning of 2014 for us and we are aiming to work towards the South American Games in Ecuador and then the World Championship for Women in Turkey," he said.

"However, with this call-up (of players) we are continuing the reformulation process we started last year with a view to Rio 2016.

"In addition, we are strengthening and giving more international experience to the group of selectable athletes."

With an average age of just over 23-years-old, it will be another exciting and emerging team that heads to Edmonton to face Canada and it is likely that the same roster will be utilised.

Only half of the team which finished with a bronze medal at the FIBA American Championship for Women in Xalapa last year are included for the trip northwards.

Nevertheless, the line-up will still be be spearheaded by the trio of Clarissa Dos Santos, Patricia Teixeira and Tatiane Pacheco, along with Debora Da Costa, Fabiana De Souza and Taina Paixao who are also back on board.

Without a glut of veterans and standout performers including the likes of Erika Souza, Damiris Dantas, Adriana Pinto, Karla Da Costa and Nadia Colhado, the focus will be on those given an opportunity by Zanon to force their way into the reckoning not only for Rio, but also for Turkey.

Most of the buzz around the new recruits is based upon the inclusion of the outstanding Isabela Ramona, a phenomenally talented player who top scored at last year's FIBA U19 World Championship for Women while playing under the watchful eye of the legendary Janeth Arcain.

Bianca Araujo is also very highly rated, having played at the FIBA U17 World Championship for Women two years ago in Amsterdam - although perhaps the FIBA World Championship for Women could come a little too soon for the pair.

The duo will be joined by other hopefuls Carina Dos Santos Martins who played in the FIBA South American Championship triumph last summer, Leila Zabani who participated at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women in Thailand five years ago.

And, even though Jaqueline De Paula Silvestre and Karina Da Silva Jacob do not follow the youthful trend, both have been rewarded for impressive domestic seasons at club level.

Brazil will play three consecutive games against Canada between 26-28 June, with the WNBA trio of Souza, Dantas and Colhado expected to link-up with the senior team in time to play a full part in Turkey.
