AUS - Joyce preparing the ground for decision-making

CANBERRA (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Australia head coach Brendan Joyce has confessed his mind will soon be turning to who he will include on his final roster for the FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.

Speaking ahead of the Opals' last domestic-based training camp next week on the New South Wales Central Coast, the play-caller will have 15 players to assess in what promises to be a defining phase of preparation.

Joyce has earmarked the camp as integral for players hoping to remain involved in the programme and ultimately, participation in Istanbul.

"With the upcoming tours of Japan and Europe, as a coaching staff we need to start thinking about who can contribute to the team at the World Championship - this camp will play a significant role in defining who those players will be," he confirmed.

"This period of our preparation is challenging as it is exciting for all involved as we draw closer to making the decision on the final 12 that will represent the Opals in Turkey," he explained.

"The six days will be another opportunity to build on the great work we have done with the squad over the past six months and further integrate those players returning from abroad."

Joyce has retained much of the squad that came together at the Basketball Australia National Centre of Excellence (CoE) earlier this month, including a host of big names.

Fresh from penning a deal to play for the Dandenong Rangers, Liz Cambage is joined by three-time Olympians, Laura Hodges and Belinda Snell, while 2012 London bronze medallist Rachel Jarry continues to return to full fitness.

Melbourne Boomers trio Natalie Burton, Rebecca Allen and Tess Madgen join Bendigo Spirit counterparts Tessa Lavey, Kelly Wilson and Gabrielle Richards in the squad.

Jayco Opals veteran Jenni Screen, Leilani Mitchell, Marianna Tolo, Cayla Francis and Natalie Hurst also head to Terrigal after impressive performances at the Centre of Excellence camp.

However, Lauren Jackson and Alice Kunek will both miss out again through injury.

Joyce also took time to express his excitement at what he and his players will be able to do for the locals in Terrigal during their time at the camp.

"To be able to bring the the Opals to the New South Wales Central Coast is not only great for the programme, but brilliant for the basketball community," he said.

"The Central Coast has a vibrant basketball culture and we're excited to contribute to the growth and development of the game as much as we can."

During the camp period, the players will be conducting a basketball clinic and also handing the chance for fans to see them in action for the last time on home soil ahead of the FIBA World Championship for Women.

They will play a scrimmage game against the New South Wales Country Men's U20 team on Thursday 10 June.

Joyce will also have a small number of WNBA players to call upon including the likes of Penny Taylor and Erin Phillips, who are expected to join the party at a later date during preparation.
