USA nominate 39 players for U17 Worlds training camp

COLORADO SPRINGS (2016 FIBA U17 World Championship) - United States head coach Don Showalter will have 39 players at his training camp for the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship and USA Basketball expects major competition for the 12 spots on the team in Zaragoza.

Eleven of the 12 players from the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship winners including MVP Gary Trent Jr were among those nominated.

"This training camp will be extremely competitive based upon the deep pool of talented players on the USA Junior National Team and how hard each player has worked to improve their games over the past year," said USA Basketball men's national team director Sean Ford.

Also chosen from the 2015 U16 team to return for the training camp starting on June 10 are second-leading scorer Markus Howard as well as third-leading scorer and top rebounder Wendell Carter Jr.

Jalen Hill was the only player from the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship team not on the 39-player list. The finalists will likely be selected on June 12, with the final 12-man roster will be named no later than June 17.

The three-time undefeated reigning champions United States have been drawn into Group A along with EgyptTurkey and Chinese Taipei. The tournament runs from 23 June-3 July in the Spanish city of Zaragoza.

Our strength as a team will be athletic ability, length and the quantity of players capable of playing multiple positions. - Ford

Some of the players come from famous basketball families, including Trent Jr, whose father Gary Trent played more than 500 games in the NBA for four franchises from 1995-2004.

One of Trent Jr's teammates from the U16 USA side last summer is his Apple Valley High School teammate Tre Jones, whose brother Tyus Jones won the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship and completed his rookie season with the Minnesota Timberwolves last month.

Also among the 39 selectees is Charles O'Bannon Jr, whose father Charles O'Bannon played two seasons with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA and played professionally in Japan until 2013.

Austin Wiley meanwhile gets a good portion of his basketball genes from his mother Vickie Orr Wiley, who won the 1990 FIBA Women's World Championship with the United States and collected bronze at the 1992 Olympic Games.
