Meesseman headlines for Belgium as Cats announce Qualifiers squad

BRUSSELS (Belgium) - Belgian Cats' leader Emma Meesseman is the standout name on the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Qualifiers squad, which also features a number of exciting new faces this time around.

Announcing his first candidate list since being appointed as the head coach of the Belgian national team, playcaller Valery Demory has turned strongly towards the future with plenty of exciting youth stars in the 15-strong lineup.

Belgium squad for the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Qualifers
Julie Allemand Nastja Claessens Antonia Delaere Serena-Lynn Geldof
Ine Joris Kyara Linskens Maxuella Lisowa Becky Massey
Billie Massey Emma Meesseman Hanne Mestdagh Jana Raman
Elise Ramette Laure Resimont Julie Vanloo

As well as the phenomenal Meesseman and star playmaker Julie Allemand, the backbone of the team that has been behind Belgium's rise to prominence are all back on board, with familiar faces such as Antonia Delaere, Kyara Linskens, Hanne Mestdagh, Julie Vanloo and Jana Raman getting the nod.

However, the biggest talking point might just be the inclusion of rising stars such as Maxuella Lisowa who has done good things at Castors Braine, as well as Nastja Claessens who has been outstanding in the Belgian youth ranks.

With the 2001-born center Ine Joris also getting a place and the Massey sisters, Billie and Becky both included, there looks to be intense competition for places and a healthy mix of experience and youth.

Belgium will play against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany and North Macedonia in Group A of the Qualifiers.
