Day 6: Canada and Argentina will play for Continental Gold

BUENOS AIRES (FIBA Women’s AmeriCup) – Canada defeated Brazil 84-45, Argentina defeated Puerto Rico 48-44, as both teams earned the right to play for continental gold and received two of the three tickets available to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Brazil and Puerto Rico will play for Bronze and the last ticket available to the World Cup 2018 in Spain.

Canada booked a trip back to the Final of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup with an 84-45 semifinal win over Brazil. Led offensively by 16 points from Nirra Fields, the Canadians jumped to a 12-point lead after a 24-12 first quarter. Canada maintained a high-octane offensive with 41% shooting from the field and 22 assists. Canada found another offensive weapon in 2015 AmeriCup MVP Kia Nurse, who also added 16 points and helped her team secure the trip to the Semi-Finals and a ticket to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018.

Argentina booked its ticket to the Final of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup with a 48-44 win over Puerto Rico. The host of the continental championship took full advantage of a slow start from the Boricuas and escaped to a 9-point lead, with great job from Agostina Burani. Puerto Rico recovered on time and won the second quarter 14-9 to cut the difference to 4 points. Once again, Puerto Rico suffered a slow start in the third quarter, as Argentina escaped to a comfortable lead with a 7-0 run. Puerto Rico cut the lead to 4 points, but then appeared the great offensive power of Burani, who scored two long range shots and gave Argentina some breathing room on the scoreboard. Puerto Rico kept fighting and closed the gap once again. Debora Gonzalez secured the qualification to the Final and the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup from the free-throw line. Agostina Burani was instrumental in the Argentinian victory with a 26-point and 12-rebound “double-double”.

Tomorrow on the last day of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2017, Puerto Rico and Brazil will fight for the Bronze Medal and the last ticket available to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018 in Spain. Argentina and Canada will play for continental gold.
