FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2021 logo unveiled

YAOUNDE (Cameroon) - One hundred days before the opening tip-off of the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2021, FIBA and hosts Cameroon have unveiled the official logo of the continent's 12-nation showcase set for September 17-26.

The new logo features a lioness and a basketball as the main images in fiery shades of red and yellow. The lion is culturally significant in Cameroon with several national sports teamknown as the Les Lions Indomptables’ - The Indomitable Lions.

The logo's green background hints at the country's fauna, tea leaves and wildlife while also embracing Cameroon's traditional shield pattern. The logo also proudly displays the green, red and yellow colors of the Cameroon flag.

The biennial Women's AfroBasket will be tipping off on September 17 at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex in the Cameroonian capital, which will be hosting the competition for the second time following 2015 when Cameroon finished second to Senegal.

In addition to Cameroon, four teams have already been automatically qualified for the event: 2019 champions Nigeria, finalists Senegal, third-placed finishers Mali as well as the fourth semi-finalists Mozambique. The other seven spots will be decided in regional qualifying tournaments, which have been taking place from May across the continent and will conclude in July.

While the locals hope Cameroon can finally hoist the trophy, Yaounde could very well see another battle between Nigeria and Senegal during the tournament. Nigeria knocked off Senegal in the 2017 and 2019 Finals, while Mali and Mozambique have followed up at third and fourth, respectively, in both events. Cameroon finished eighth and 10th at the 2017 and 2019 events, respectively.
