Elonu headlines Nigeria's final roster for FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2017

LAGOS (FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2017) – Nigeria head coach Sam Vincent has picked his 12-player squad for this week’s FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2017 in Bamako, Mali from August 17-28.

The cut has seen 17 players out of the team from the initial 29-player provisional list.

The Nigerians, who finished third place in Cameroon, are currently aiming to make a big difference in Mali with Aisha Mohammed as captain, Ezinne Kalu and WNBA new recruit Evelyn Akhator on the squad.

Ndidi Madu, Adaeze Alaeze, Ezinne Kalu, Cecelia Okoye and Ugo Nwaigwe as well were all impressive at the camp.

Also on the squad are Sarah Ogoke, Nkechi Akashili, Upe Atosu, Priscillia Chioma Udeaja and Adaora Elonu.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group A alongside reigning champions Senegal, Egypt, Guinea, Mozambique and DR Congo.

Head Coach Sam Vincent said he is impressed with the performance of the players and is looking forward to a good outing in Mali.

"I think this team is ready to go and fight for the podium. The girls have worked very hard and are ready for the opposition that would come our way. Nigeria is not new to AfroBasket and the opposition does not matter to us."

Elonu, who was a member of the squad that won bronze in Cameroon 2015, said that she is happy to be back on the team and set for a title place.

"Nigeria is good to go and we have trained very hard and are set. We look forward to winning the title," she said.
