Kazma blow out Al Shamal, end Gulf Group Phase with back-to-back wins

KUWAIT CITY (Kuwait) - Kazma hardly broke a sweat in beating Al Shamal, 119-62, to wrap up their Group Phase campaign with back-to-back wins in the FIBA WASL-Gulf League Season 2, Tuesday night at the Shaikh Saad Alabdullah Sport Hall Complex.

Game heroes: Clint Chapman showed the way once more with 26 points and 19 rebounds for the Kuwaiti side, who finished as the no. 2 seed in Group B by virtue of having the superior point difference against a fellow 3-3 team in Shabab Al Ahli-Dubai.

Ahmad Albaloushi came through with his own double-double as he finished with 23 points and 11 assists. Forward Abdulaziz Alhamidi supplied 21 points and 3 steals.

Travis Leslie provided 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Ahmad Alali chipped in 10 points as a total of five players finished in double figures in the lopsided victory.

STEP AHEAD Player of the Game: Chapman earned STEP AHEAD Player of the Game honors anew after flirting with a 20-20. The veteran forward is the first-ever player in FIBA WASL to accomplish such a feat when he had 21 and 21 against Shabab Al Ahli-Dubai last week.

Turning point: Kazma held a slim two-point edge late in the first quarter until Alhamidi's triple sparked a 13-5 rally to finish the period with a decade's worth of a lead, 32-22.

But it wasn't until the following frame where the floodgates would open, when Albaloushi and Co. suddenly went on a scoring tear and built a 61-39 advantage at the half.

Stats don't lie: Kazma tallied 35 assists, now the second-most by a team in a FIBA WASL game, in the win that sent the club to its second straight Qualification to Semi-Finals trip.

They said: "Like I told the guys, it's not easy to play a game where you already see yourself as a winner. Mentally we needed to prepare for this game. Shamal did not have a great season in WASL, they came here with nothing to lose. This showed in the first quarter. But with our consistency, great reaction from the guys especially on the defensive end ... when you get so hot, so confident, the basket becomes like a swimming pool - big, and the shots went well for us." - Bojan Lazic, Head Coach, Kazma

"It's the same as last year. I wanted to play in WASL last year. That's what brought me to the region. That's why I'm here today. I want to compete at the highest level and WASL is the highest level for this region. But my personal goals are the same as the team's. The last two games were very important to us to close out and finish second in the group. We did that. Next step is the qualification rounds. Just taking it day by day and trying to improve." - Clint Chapman, Kazma

"Even though it's been an up and down season, and we dealt with some things here in WASL, I know my guys competed. Even though there's been a lot of injuries and whatnot, we tried to fight every night." - Uche Iroegbu, Al Shamal
