FIBA WASL Season 2 : Everything you need to know about the Sub-Zone Leagues' Final Phase

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The FIBA WASL Season 2 Sub-Zone Leagues Final Phase is upon us, at last.

We're certain that most fans would want to know more details about the upcoming tilt. Which ball clubs are competing? What is at stake for these teams? Where can we monitor the games?

Fret not, because here is all that you need to know.

When will the Sub-Zone Leagues Final Phase start?

Action tips off on March 4 with Qualification to Semi-Finals action, beginning with Gulf League teams Muharraq and Shabab Al Ahli-Dubai at the BBA Arena in Manama, Bahrain.

The West Asia Qualification to Semi-Finals, on the other hand, opens on March 6, with a tussle between Al Shorta and Al-Ittihad Ahli at the Al Shaeb Hall in Baghdad, Iraq.

Which teams are vying for Semi-Final tickets?

Similar to the inaugurals, the Sub-Zone Leagues Final Phase starts off with the Qualification to Semi-Finals in the Gulf and West Asia leagues, featuring a total of 8 teams.

Aside from Muharraq and Shabab Al Ahli-Dubai, also competing for a ticket to the Gulf League Semis are Kazma and Al Rayyan, which starts their series on March 5 in Kuwait City.

Sagesse and Al Wahda, on the other hand, are vying for a spot in the West Asia Semis. They start their bout on March 7 in Ghazir, Lebanon - a day after Al Shorta and Al-Ittihad Ahli open theirs.

Which teams are in the Semi-Finals, by the way?

Reigning FIBA WASL champions Manama and defending Gulf League titlists Kuwait Club earned direct flights to the said sub-zone league's Semis, just waiting for their respective foes.

Manama, for one, will wait for the winner between Muharraq and Shabab Al Ahli-Dubai. The victor in the Kazma-Al Rayyan bout, meanwhile, will take on Kuwait Club.

Over at the West Asia League Semis, reigning sub-zone champions Al Riyadi and Shahrdary Gorgan are on pace for another Finals encounter as they booked the outright berths.

It sure is the goal but they will have to beat whoever their foes could be. Al Riyadi will face either Sagesse and Al Wahda, while Gorgan could battle Al Shorta or Al-Ittihad Ahli.

Are there undefeated teams coming in?

The answer is yes. Three of the four Semi-Finalists came into the Final Phase unscathed. Manama and Gorgan went 6-0 while Al Riyadi won all their four games in the Group Phase.

What is the format?

The Qualification to Semis in each Sub-Zone League will pit the second and third seeds of each group versus each other in a best-of-3 tilt, with the home court edge going to the second-seeds.

The winners will then join the teams that topped their respective groups and earned an outright spot in the semis, which will also be a best-of-3 affair.

Winners will advance to the Final and qualify for the FIBA WASL Final 8, while the losing sides will face off for the two remaining Final 8 spots in a knockout game.

What are they playing for?

Well, it is not just regional supremacy that's up for grabs in FIBA WASL. As mentioned above, the sub-zone champions and the third-place teams will make it to the culminating Final 8, where the finalists will punch tickets to the new Basketball Champions League Asia.
