Oguchi: "We just need to focus"

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Champ Oguchi wasn't crying as he made his way to the locker room to be with his Nigeria teammates on Thursday night, but he was close to doing so.

For the second consecutive Olympics, D'Tigers are struggling to get good results. They haven't won since their first contest at the 2012 Games in London against Tunisia, although in their last two attempts, the AfroBasket 2015 winners have played well.

Argentina, with a No. 4 FIBA World Ranking, thumped Nigeria, 94-66, in their first game but in the next couple of outings against No. 3 Lithuania and No. 2 Spain, the clashes were much closer.

Will Voigt's team lost 89-80 to Lithuania on Tuesday while on Thursday, Nigeria led Spain after three quarters before losing, 96-87.

Oguchi, the AfroBasket 2015 MVP, has a reputation as a player that can get hot and shoot Nigeria to victory. He did last year in Tunisia.

He couldn't have done much more against Spain. He drilled 7 of 12 shots from long range and had a game-high 24 points. He spoke after the defeat.

The loss to Spain is a tough one considering you guys fell behind by double digits but came back to take the lead.
Oguchi: It was a hard-fought match. Hats off to Spain, they're an experienced team and they pulled it out. We had a couple of turnovers that cost us and they capitalized on them.

Why is Nigeria finding it hard to get over the hump and win one of these games?
Oguchi: It's a lack of focus. We seem to be losing maybe one quarter throughout the whole game. We go through long stretches where we don't execute and don't play our defensive schemes. If we can play close attention to detail for long stretches, I think we'll be okay.

One thing that is working is your shooting stroke. You were drilling those 3-balls.
Oguchi: I've been shooting threes for a long time. My teammates did a good job of getting me open. My coaches did a good job in making sure I got it rolling. Long hours in the gym just paying off.
