Marquinhos in the clouds after making the shot that saved Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - It's safe to say that Marquinhos has never made a more important basket than the one he did on Tuesday against Spain, a tap-in with 5.5 seconds remaining that gave Brazil a 66-65 victory.

The triumph allowed the Olympic hosts to even their record at 1-1 and improve their chances of a top-four finish, which is needed to advance to the Quarter-Finals.

Marquinhos has spoken about the game.

That was an unforgettable game, Marquinhos.
Marquinhos: It was a good game, we were able to beat a great team, especially one led by one of the great players of all time in Pau (Gasol). A great game for us and our spirit, in this competition going forward, and for those cheering for us in Carioca.

Marquinhos (BRA) is sky high after lifting Brazil to victory

Speaking of Pau, he got a real hard time from the Brazilian crowd. There were some rude shouts directed at him.
Marquinhos: I understand, they're hosting the Olympic Games. I want to apologize for the Brazilian people. I know they mean no disrespect for Pau, they just go that way against the best player on the other team.

The shot you had near the end that proved to be the game-winner, that was quite a moment for you.
Marquinhos: This is something I give total credit to Ruben (Magnano) for. He tries to tell all the players to be present in a possession, like it's the last one. I would have never imagined I would make the winning basket in the Olympic Games. It's incredible for me. I understand the enormity of the basket, not only because it's an Olympic game, but because we play here in Rio de Janeiro, and I know the fans have been waiting for a moment like this, especially from the national team, for a long, long time.

Was it the most important shot of your career?
It truly is, I understand the enormity of this, not only for basketball, but for all sports in Brazil. I understand how big this is for the national team.

What about the ball? Are you going to keep it?
Marquinhos: I took the ball and now, I'm thinking about framing it more than anything else.
