George reaches out to injured French gymnast

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - USA superstar Paul George is drilling 3-pointers and getting fans on their feet with some rim-rattling, high-flying dunks.

He's one of the reasons why the USA are prohibitive favorites to capture a third consecutive Olympic gold medal at the Rio de Janeiro Games.

But George, who has shone in wins over China and Venezuela, isn't only doing his bit to help the Americans maintain their hegemony in the sport. He's also embracing the Olympic spirit.

Just a couple of years removed from the broken leg he suffered while getting ready up for the FIBA Basketball World Cup and now fully healed, George has seen another athlete in Rio go down with a gruesome leg injury.

French gymnast Samir Ait Said fractured his left leg and when George saw a replay of what had happened, he started making plans to visit his fellow Olympian.

The initial plan was to meet the Frenchman on Monday but the USA had their clash with Venezuela. After the Americans' triumph, George talked to The Vertical. He says he remains hopeful of seeing him.

"I was disgusted by it happening," George said of watching Said's injury. "It brought me back to my days. It was difficult. I didn't want to watch it, but in order for me to go over and talk to him, I had to see what happened. It was tough, tough to watch."

George says he wants the meeting to take place.

"I'm here for him," he said. "I'll go over at some point. Whenever my day is light and he's willing for a visit, we'll make it happen."

George believes he can really be a source of encouragement.

"I came back stronger and better for it," the Indiana Pacer said. "For his case, he is more athletic. It's a story that, as well as mine, can inspire as well. It's all about encouraging.

"I know it is tough, an Olympic gymnast, their window is just as small as ours. He's probably been training his whole life for this opportunity. I'll definitely be in his corner."
