France blow by China, chalk up first victory

RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - France bounced back from their horror show against Australia by beating China on Monday, 88-60.

Nando de Colo scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the second quarter, when Les Bleus took control of the game.

Leading 19-14 at the end of the opening period, the French extended the advantage to 42-23 by half-time and stayed in command for the remainder of the contest. Tony Parker had 14 points and 8 assists.

Turning Point: China, level at 14-14 late in the first quarter, lost the initiative after Boris Diaw made a couple of free-throws and Mickael Gelabale connected from the arc. The latter then capped the 7-0 run when he knocked down another jumper.

Stats Don't Lie: France held a slender 8-6 advantage on the boards at the end of the first quarter but took control in the second, grabbing 12 to China's 3. Rudy Gobert, a player France need to get going, had 5 blocks to go with his 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Hero: Nicolas Batum, trying to hit back from a poor game against Australia, set the tone for the French dominance on the glass in the second quarter. He had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with his 7 points and 3 assists.

The Bottom Line: France, who lost 87-66 to the Boomers, are now 1-1 in Group A while China, who fell to the USA in their first game, are now 0-2. The French next face Serbia on Wednesday while the Chinese will square off against Venezuela.
