Campazzo to the rescue for Argentina in OT win over Lithuania

CORDOBA (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Argentina were in need of a confidence boost following defeats to the United States in Las Vegas and at home to Australia.

They got one on Wednesday night by edging Lithuania, 86-85, with Facundo Campazzo's drive at the end of overtime giving them victory.

"We fought until the end," said Campazzo, who is gearing up for his second Olympics.

Coming off a terrific campaign with Murcia in Spain's top flight, Campazzo came off the bench against Lithuania and scored 16 points.

Paulius Jankunas knotted the contest at 68-68 with a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter and Lithuania then pulled into an 85-82 lead with 44 seconds to go in the extra period after a pair of Adas Juskevicius free-throws.

Campazzo cut the deficit to just one after being fouled and making two from the charity stripe, and he then scored the winner to beat a Baltic side that had recently defeated Spain in Kaunas and Malaga.

Argentina coach Sergio Hernandez knows he will get big performances from the likes of Campazzo, Luis Scola, Manu Ginobili and Andres Nocioni on most nights, but he also needs the youngsters to contribute.

One that certainly did on Wednesday was Patricio Garino, a player that saw big minutes with Argentina at last year's FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico City. He had 5 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Nicolas Laprovittola started at point guard and had another fine performance with 15 points and a game-high 6 steals.

Captain Scola led Argentina with 17 points and 9 rebounds while veteran Jankunas scored 17 and grabbed 8 boards in defeat.
