U17 star duo, absences highlight young Australian squad

CANBERRA (2015 FIBA U19 World Championship) - Australia have set their 12-man roster for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship with two stars from last year’s U17 World Championship leading the way and a number of absences making the biggest news.

Throughout the process, Australia coach Adam Caporn has been dealing with players turning down the team, de-committing or getting injured. But the coach has finalised the roster he will bring with him to Heraklion/Crete, Greece, where Australia will take on Canada, Italy and Tunisia in Group C.

Here is the Australian roster: George Blagojevic, Kyle Clark, Deng Gak, Angus Glover, Jordan Hunter, Tanner Krebs, Geremy McKay, William McDowell-White, Jack McVeigh, Dejan VasiljevicJack White and Tom Wilson.

The biggest two names are Wilson and Vasiljevic, who both starred on the Australian team that reached the final of the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship. They both attended the NBA Basketball Without Borders Global Camp and also helped their Victorian team to win the U20 Australian Junior Championship.

Both Wilson and Vasiljevic are 1997 born and will be competing against players a year older at the 1996 age group tournament. But they are not the only underclass players called on by Caporn. All told, eight of the Australian players were born in 1997 or 1998 - Clark, Hunter, Vasiljevic, White, Wilson (all 1997), Gak, Glover and McDowell-White (all 1998).

That being said, Clark, Gak and White also have the experience of playing last summer at the U17 World Championship and reaching the title game against the United States.

Caporn also has seven of the 10 players who helped Australia qualify for the U19 World Championship by going undefeated at the 2014 FIBA Oceania U18 Championship - Blagojevic, Clark, Hunter, Krebs, Vasiljevic, White and Wilson.

Looking at the Australian team, Wilson and Vasiljevic will definitely play the biggest roles on the team. Clark, Krebs and McVeigh will patrol the wings with Blagojevic serving as an athletic power forward who can play inside but also shoot from long range. And White, Hunter and Gak will man the low post.

Many observers were surprised that Harry Froling did not make the team, after playing a key role in both the U17 Worlds and the U18 Oceania tournaments.

Froling is just one of many players not on the team for a variety of reasons. Among the players who would have been eligible to suit up for the Aussies this summer in Greece are Ben Simmons, Isaac Humphries, Jonah Bolden, Thon Maker, Matur Maker, Deng Adel, Rhys Vague and Jock Perry.

Caporn however has picked his team and the focus will be on who is there and not on who is missing.

The Australians will have a final camp in early June before leaving for Spain on 10 June. They will practice and have games in Spain and Croatia before the tournament starts.
