KPA, Equity Hawks book tickets to FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017

KAMPALA (FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women 2017) – Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Equity Hawks will represent FIBA Africa Zone 5 at the upcoming FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017 from November 3-12 in Angola.

KPA lifted their ninth record regional title after defeating the bankers 63-49 in the Kenyan derby that many expected to be closely contested rather than one-sided.

Equity Hawks led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter but the Mombasa side established a 27-23 lead at the half time break. A powerful third quarter saw Anthony Ojukwu's side lead 46-35 much to the frustration of the Equity Hawks who were protecting their unbeaten run at the tournament.

In the fourth quarter, KPA ran riot and eventually won the game emphatically to book a place at the 12-team continental showpiece.

Speaking to FIBA.basketball after the game, KPA point guard Natalie Akinyi said, "We had to win with a maximum of nine points and if we lost, we would finish as number three so we could not risk. Being the defending champions, we had to play our hearts out."

KPA won their debut regional title in 2001, defended it the following year and won it four straight years from 2006-2009 before winning again in 2011, 2016 and now 2017 making them the most successful side in the region.

UCU Lady Canons settled for Third-Place while fellow Ugandan side finished in fourth position. APR of Rwanda were fifth, Don Bosco from Tanzania sixth and Somalian debutants Horseed were seventh.
