Maihom happy with first win, aims to keep Thailand at top level

WUHAN (2015 FIBA Asia Women's Championship) - Coming to Wuhan as one of the only four survivors from a line-up that brought her country back into the Level I fold in front of a home crowd two years ago, Thailand forward Thidaporn Maihom knew her responsibilities very well.

On Tuesday, the 22-year-old stepped up the gas returning a double-double (19 points and 10 rebounds), a first for the SEABA team in the competition, leading the side to a 65-63 win against India.

"We knew we had to keep them under pressure," said Maihom who also collected 8 steals, to come close to a triple-double.

"The whole point was to cut down the mistakes and apply pressure on them," she said.

Now we will look to stay in Level I. This is our next target. - Maihom

"We were indeed looking to win this game. We know our status," Maihom said.

With the cushion of this win backing them, Thailand will hope that form will rule the roost in other remaining games and aim to finish at No 5 in Level I. That will set up a play-off game against the No 2 team from Level II with the winners earning the righ to play in Level I at the 2017 FIBA Asia Women's Championship.

"We have a lot to work to do at the grass root level," Maihom said of the need to improve the basics in Thailand basketball.

"It'll be a lot of hard work, but we are prepared for it."
