First Bank overcome AS Vita Club, InterClube cruise to victory

LUANDA (FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017) - First Bank of Nigeria recorded their second straight win at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup Women 2017 following a 76-64 win over AS Vita Club on Monday at the Kilamba Arena.

Shooting guard Nkechi Akashili was at her best so far at the tournament dropping an impressive 21 points and picked five rebounds to orchestrate her side's hard earned victory.

The Elephant Girls led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and established a 10-point lead in the second quarter to lead 36-26 at Half-Time.

The start of the third quarter saw AS Vita Club display a rejuvenated spirit and closed the gap to just three points 35-38 but First Bank deployed big in the paint and ran away with the game leading 56-42 at the end of that period.

Experience played a big role as Minata Fofana and Chioma Udeaja combined for solid performances on both sides of the court to ensure victory.

"It was a sweet win, our second so far. It was a very difficult game because AS Vita Club came out very tough and aggressive. " - Ahmedu

Maweja Kapinga and Ortice Kabobo scored 15 points apiece while Marlene Matokio Ngobeleza added 10 for AS Vita Club in what they will consider a tough loss for them to take.

First Bank head coach Peter Ahmedu told FIBA.basketball that, "It was a sweet win, our second so far. It is a plus for the team. It was a very difficult game because AS Vita Club came out very tough and aggressive from the beginning till the end but we came out top."

Meanwhile, InterClube's small forward Nicole Michael had a field day sinking 24 points and picking five rebounds as her side made light work of a toothless Equity Bank Hawks 99-30.

The reigning African champions were in such fine form that head coach Appolinario Paquete rested his starting lineup in the last quarter. It was a done deal as they cruised to their third win in a row.

Erica Guilherme Agostinho and Daniel Rosemira Djamila added 16 and 10 points respectively to cruise to the biggest win at the tournament so far.
