New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea victorious on Day 1

PAPUA NEW GUINEA (FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup 2017) – The first ever FIBA Melanesia Basketball Cup started with a bang. Fiji and New Caledonia open the event with a thriller.

Fiji took an early lead after putting up 25 points in the first quarter. On top following halftime and the third quarter, Fiji was looking like cruising to a game one victory until New Caledonia outscored Fiji 16-23 in the fourth quarter. Steevan Sillant led New Caledonia with 17 points and Fiji's Maques Whippy added 19 points.

Papua New Guinea has notched their first win in game one of the Melanesia Cup in front of their home fans. Leading the entire game, Papua New Guinea protected their home floor and sent a message to the rest of the competition. Papua New Guinea's Moses Apiko put up 13 points while Solomon Islands' Hilton Gwali added 6 points.
