Greece come alive in Matosinhos as Round of 16 takes shape

MATOSINHOS (FIBA U20 Women's European Championship 2016) - It was Greece who grabbed the headlines on Day 3 of the FIBA U20 Women's European Championship 2016.

They took their first victory of the tournament with a jaw-dropping 100-80 success against Netherlands as Eleanna Christinaki recorded a dazzling 35 points, while team-mate Pinelopi Pavlopoulou added 21 points in support. It gave Greece second place in Group C, while France took pole position after beating Latvia to remain flawless.

Russia are also undefeated after moving to 3-0 in Group D with a win against Slovak Republic and Belgium took their first success by beating Turkey 60-46, thanks to 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists from Julie Allemand.

Italy are also yet to taste defeat after beating Sweden, while Germany dodged a bullet to get past Serbia 63-61 in dramatic fashion to claim second place in Group B as Emma Stach finished with 17 points and 10 boards.

The Round of 16 took shape after Spain cruised past Bosnia and Herzegovina to finish top of Group A after coming out best in a three-way tie with Portugal and Poland who also had 2-1 records. Poland beat the hosts 77-74 in a thriller to disappoint the 2,000-strong home support. Anna Makurat scored 23 points and hit some real dagger shots.
