Round of 16 is set at #FIBAU18Europe in Udine

UDINE (FIBA U18 Women's European Championship 2018) - The line-up for the all-important Round of 16 is now known after the curtain fell on the first phase of the FIBA U18 Women's European Championship 2018.

Italy stole the limelight as they took down reigning champions Belgium 53-55 - much to the delight of the home fans in Udine who had seen their team trailing by 19 points early in the contest.

Italy must now step up again when they face a Germany side on Wednesday that may have the injured Nyara Sabally back and suited up.

Either Russia or Serbia will be denied a shot at both the podium and a place at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2019.  Russia pipped Poland 75-67, driven by a smart 15-point, 13-rebound double-double from Daria Ignatova .

However, they may feel meeting Serbia is not much of a reward for their efforts. Serbia had led by 16 early against Czech Republic, but eventually lost 79-44,  leading to their date with Russia.

Latvia lost on Day One, but came roaring back to top the Group as they handed Hungary a first defeat, with Aleksa Gulbe registering 24 points and 9 rebounds in a 71-59 triumph.

Elsewhere, Spain responded to Sunday's surprise setback against Serbia by rolling over Bosnia and Herzegovina 82-45, which was the highest score of the competition so far.

Round of 16 ties

Belgium v Slovenia
Latvia v Sweden
Italy v Germany
Hungary v Croatia
France v Bosnia and Herzegovina
