Quarter-Finals preview: Can Germany slow down Giannis, finally beat Greece?

BERLIN (Germany) - Germany and Greece will face off in the second Quarter-Finals of the night and Greece have a clear advantage historically speaking. Germany's last win over Greece dates back to EuroBasket 2001 in the Elimination Round to reach the Quarter-Finals. Since then Greece famously beat Germany in the EuroBasket 2005 Final as well as in the 2009 Olympics and EuroBasket 2009 second group stage.

This time around Germany are hosts and considered right up there with Greece among the contenders for the 2022 title after winning five of their six games - losing only to Slovenia in the Group Phase and knocking off Montenegro in the Round of 16. Greece, however, have shined throughout and are the only undefeated team left in the competition, grabbing win number six against Czech Republic thanks to a strong fourth quarter. EuroBasket 2005 was also the last time Germany reached the Semi-Finals while Greece's last top-four finish was third place in 2009.

Germany v Greece  - Tuesday, 20:30 CET

Key Matchup:
The key matchup for any game with Giannis Antetokounmpo is figuring out how to slow him down. Czech Republic held him to just five points for the first 23 minutes and he exploded to finish with 27 points. It will not be easy for Germany either, and it would seem that Daniel Theis would be one of the main players who will try to defend him. Franz Wagner could also help though his health is uncertain after he had an MRI on his ankle and is questionable for the game.

X-Factor: It's almost a given that Antetokounmpo will get his points and then it comes down to limiting his teammates, and Greece's second-leading scorer is Tyler Dorsey, who hits 42.9 percent from long range and gets a lot of transition points on offense. If Germany can keep Dorsey in check, that will go a long way in giving the home fans a reason to celebrate.

Stats Don't Lie: This promises to be a high-scoring affair even though both teams play tough defense as Greece rank third in scoring (91.7 points oer game) and Germany fourth (91.3). The Germans have a slight advantage on three-pointers - 38 percent to 35.6 percent - and free throws - 83.7 percent and 78.9 percent, respectively. Greece meanwhile snatch 9.7 steals per game and Germany just 4.8.

They Said: "[Reaching the Quarter-Finals] is what we expected. But our expectations go farther. We expected to get to Berlin, we expected to win in Berlin. Really just one game at a time … The biggest thing I am proud of is the way the guys have come together, how they've stayed together, the chemistry they have, the togetherness we have, the spirit we have. With the national team, that goes a long way." - Germany coach Gordie Herbert

"We are expecting a sold out game so we have to be mentally prepared for that. Germany have been playing really good since the beginning of the tournament - just like us. So it will be a really tough opponent for sure. We have to play great defense to continue playing in this tournament. - Georgios Papagiannis, Greece
