How do they qualify to the quarter-finals?

The time has come for the third and last window of the initial phase of the Basketball Champions League Americas. The four groups have much to define because after this week the quarter-finals table will be formed, with the eight teams that will fight for the title of the maximum tournament at the level continental. Here the combinations to get into the next phase, group by group.

Namely, the competition regulation says about the classification system: If two (2) or more teams have the same record of points in all the matches of the group, the matches played between these two (2) or more teams will decide the classification. If there is equality, the following tiebreaker criteria will be followed:

  • Greater difference of match points in the matches played between them.
  • Greater amount of match points achieved in the matches played between them.
  • Greater difference in match points in all group matches.
  • More match points achieved in all the matches of the group.

If these criteria still do not allow a decision to be made at the end of the Group Phase, a raffle will be held to define the final classification.

GROUP A:
San Lorenzo already secured his place in the quarter-finals and as the first of his zone, after three victories, so he knows that he will play in the first series the best of three games against the second of Group B (they make up Quimsa, Franca and Aguada).

As for Mogi Das Cruzes and Biguá, they will define second place in the area on Monday 12/16. Brazilians won in Uruguay 92-90, so the Charrúas would qualify by triumphing by three points of difference, or if they win, at least they should celebrate in Buenos Aires. For Mogi it will be the last game of the group and he must win it to pass, while Biguá will subtract a game, on Thursday against San Lorenzo.

GROUP B
Quimsa is the leader with 5 points and will qualify to quarters without relying on anyone, beating Franca in Santiago del Estero. If he loses, he will have to wait because there could even be a triple tie if Aguada beats the Brazilians. Franca is the only one of the three who only played two games, so he knows that a clear victory would almost place him in the next phase, but he must not be trusted because the two games are a visitor.

Aguada rescued one more life in the triumph against Quimsa in supplementary in the second window, so it depends on himself to fight for the classification. On Tuesday 17/12 they play Quimsa-Franca and on Friday 20/12, Aguada-Franca.

GROUP C:
It is one of those with the clearest picture. Flamengo already qualified by winning his first three games, so he will close to his people before the Institute without pressure. However, that meeting can be decisive for Cordoba, looking to reach the playoff crosses.

The first match of the third window will be key. In Chile, Valdivia and Instituto will face each other and if the Argentine team wins, they will be in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, if Chileans get along the triumph, they will have to wait for another fall of Institute in Brazil to enter to carve to achieve second place, since both would be left with 5 points. On Tuesday 17/12 they play Valdivia-Instituto and on 20/12, Flamengo-Instituto.

GROUP D:
This is another group that has the leader already classified. Real Estelí swept the initial matches, and although he has a clash against Fuerza Regia in Mexico (Monday 16/12), he is in the quarterfinals. Precisely, Fuerza Regia depends on itself it because if he wins the two remaining matches, he will get into the next phase.

The other team in question is Capitanes. The franchise that joined Centauros for this competition knows that beating Fuerza Regia or if it falls even for 3 points (provided that Estelí has defeated Fuerza Regia), he will advance because in the first crossing between both Mexican teams in Chihuahua, the duel was for Capitanes 97-93.

The BCLA will continue with its windows for the quarter-finals between January 14 and 21, 2020. There, the 1st of Group A will be measured against the 2nd of Group B; the 1st of Group B against the 2nd of Group A; the 1st of Group C against the 2nd of Group D; and the 1st of Group D against the 2nd of Group C.

Then the semifinals will come, from February 14 to 29; and the final, between March 9 and 14, 2020. All playoff series will be the best of three games always home and away, with a local advantage for the best placed in the initial stage.
