These young stars stood out in the Americas Qualifiers

MIAMI (United States) – The second window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers gave us a sample of the young talent that exists in the region. These guys will be the ones running the helm of their national teams in the near future. In fact, some are already assuming a leading role.

These were the young players who stood out in the last window:

Ignacio Arroyo – Chile

Guard

Birth date: January 24, 2000 (22 years old)
Height: 185cm / 6'1"
Club: Movistar Estudiantes (ESP)

February stats stats: 12.5 PTS, 5 AST, 5 REB, 1.5 STL, 50% 3PT in 34.5 minutes per game.

Arroyo showed that his experience in basketball in Spain gave him great maturity. He has already established himself as a starter in the Chilean team and is definitely one of the key pieces of the team. He was one of the leaders in the important victory against Colombia with 18 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and 25 efficiency. That victory gave Chile a qualifying place for the second phase.

Agustin Ubal – Uruguay

Guard

Birth date: July 19, 2003 (18 years old)
Height: 198cm / 6'6"
Club: Breogan (ESP)

February stats: 11.0 PTS, 2.5 REB, 1.5 AST in 19.5 minutes per game.

Ubal, up until recently, was playing in Barcelona and will now embark on a new path with Breogán. He is showing more and more ease in his game and is always willing to take responsibility. This was demonstrated in Uruguay’s victory over Chile. Ubal took over his team's offense in the second half and finished as the leading scorer with 15 points and 60% shooting from the field.

Marcos Chacon – Cuba

Guard

Birth date: June 24, 2003 (18 years old)
Height: 194cm / 6'4"
Club: Armador Capitalino Habana (CUB)

February stats: 10.5 PTS, 2.0 AST, 1.5 REB, 50% 3PT in 22.5 minutes per game.

Cuba came out winless in the second window once again, but Chacon was a bright spot on the team. In a position as important as point guard, the young player showed confidence coming off the bench and did not get nervous when it was his turn to shoot. In the two games against Mexico and Puerto Rico, he had similar performances with 10 and 11 points, respectively. The long distance is perhaps the most striking thing about his game, this time he shot for 50%.

Yahir Bonilla – Mexico

Foward

Birth date: February 26, 2003 (19 years old)
Height: 204cm / 6'8"
Club: FC Barcelona (ESP)

February stats: 5.5 PTS, 2.0 AST, 1.0 STL, 1.5 REB, 50% FG in 14.0 minutes per game.

The up and coming star showed what Mexican basketball is made of. Bonilla had no problem going head to head with more experienced players in Team USA, even those with NBA stints. In his 23 minutes vs. the United States, he scored 9 points (4-4 FG), with four assists and two steals. Bonilla made it clear that he meets the conditions to take on, sooner rather than later, a leading role in Mexico’s starting lineup.
