Rodriguez and Hernangomez bolster Spain squad for third window

MADRID (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers) - Sergio Rodriguez and Juancho Hernangomez are in line to make their debuts in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers for Spain in the third window at Slovenia and at home to Belarus.

Rodriguez, a linchpin in the national side since helping the country capture an Olympic silver medal in 2012, just led CSKA Moscow past BC Khimki in the VTB United League title game with 15 points and 8 assists to put an exclamation mark on his first season with the Russian giants.

Hernangomez, who is coming off his second season with the Denver Nuggets, made his senior team bow for Spain at FIBA EuroBasket 2017 and helped the team reach the podium with a third-place finish.

Pierre Oriola, another to have played for Spain for the first time last summer after helping Valencia capture their first-ever Liga Endesa crown, is among the 24 names announced by the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB). He spent this past season with Barcelona.

Spain 24-player squad for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers

Quino Colom Alberto Diaz Daniel Diez Jaime Fernandez
Juancho Hernangomez Ignacio Llovet Pierre Oriola Oriol Pauli

Fran Vazquez Edgar Vicedo Guillem Vives Santiago Yusta

Notable absentees from the Spain squad for the third window are the Gasol brothers (Pau and Marc), Ricky Rubio and Hernangomez's brother, Willy.

Victor Claver, Oriola's Barcelona teammate, is in the squad with injury having kept him off the roster last summer. Alberto Abalde, a star in Spain's youth teams who is coming off a terrific season with Valencia, is also included.

There are plenty of players that have made big contributions to Spain in their undefeated (4-0) start to the Qualifiers, including Quino Colom, Sebas Saiz, Xavier Rabaseda and Fran Vazquez.

Spain face a very tough trip to Slovenia (2-2), a game that will be played on June 28 in Ljubljana. They will then host Belarus (1-3) on July 1 in Malaga.

Slovenia, who beat Spain at FIBA EuroBasket 2017 in the Semi-Finals, lost the first meeting against Sergio Scariolo's team in Burgos on November 24, 92-84. Colom was outstanding in that clash for the hosts, pouring in 25 points and dishing out 9 assists.

Belarus threw a scare into Spain in Minsk on February 23, losing that contest 84-82.
