Italy keep unbeaten squad together for games against Croatia, Netherlands

TRIESTE (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers) - Unbeaten Italy will be taking an "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach for upcoming World Cup Qualifiers with scoring machine Amedeo Della Valle and the other players that have captured four victories set to face Croatia and the Netherlands.

At a press conference on Thursday in Trieste, where the Italians will square off against Croatia (1-3), coach Romeo "Meo" Sacchetti announced the squad that includes Della Valle, whose average of 23 points per game leads the team.

Other players in the squad that have featured in all four wins include Awudu Abass, Paul Biligha, Christian Burns, Ariel Filloy and Luca Vitali.

Pietro Aradori, Simone Fontecchio, Achille Polonara and Brian Sacchetti, players that have appeared in three of the wins, are also on the 24-man list.

Veteran guard Daniel Hackett is also included. Hackett, a member of the Italy sides at FIBA EuroBasket 2011, 2015 and 2017, has yet to play in the Qualifiers.

Another exciting addition to the list is the promising Davide Moretti.  A standout for Italy's youth teams, the 20-year-old is coming off a terrific first season at Texas Tech in American college basketball. Moretti played for a Red Raiders side that advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament earlier this year before falling to eventual champions Villanova.

Niccolo Mannion, a point guard who led Italy at last year's FIBA U16 European Championship, has also been included. A high school player in the United States, he is just 17 years old.

Unable to play in the Qualifiers due to injury is Alessandro Gentile while others not on the list are veterans Marco Belinelli, Danilo Gallinari, Luigi Datome and Nicolo Melli.

Belinelli has been in touch with Sacchetti, the coach revealed.

"I spoke with all the guys ... I got a nice message from Marco Belinelli, who is currently in a delicate point of his career (free agency). But Marco has promised that he will come to meet us in the coming days. A message of attachment to the NT shirt that I would like to reach even the youngest."

Italy will square off against Croatia on June 28 at the Palasport Cesare Rubini. Sacchetti's side rolled to an 80-64 triumph in the first meeting between the sides on November 26.

The Azzurri will then face the Dutch in Groningen, the Netherlands, at the MartiniPlaza on July 1. Italy hosted and won the first meeting between the teams on February 23.
