Germany's Rodl keeps faith with same squad ahead of Serbia and Georgia games

HAGEN (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers) - Germany appear to be taking an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to their squad ahead of next month's World Cup Qualifiers at home to Serbia and away to Georgia.

There has been no divergence from the preliminary group of players named before the November Qualifiers against Georgia and Austria, with coach Henrik Rodl electing to have the same ones in his latest squad.

"We have a very motivated, young and talented team that has already proved in the first qualifying window it can keep up with the big ones," Rodl said, referring to the 79-70 triumph over Georgia in Chemnitz on November 24 and a 90-49 rout of hosts Austria in Schwechat.

Germany will host Serbia on February 23 in Frankfurt and two days later take on Georgia again, only this time in Tbilisi.

The game against Serbia is going to be played before a crowd that is packed to the rafters of the Fraport Arena.

Against Georgia, team captain Robin Benzing poured in a game-high 25 points in the 79-70 win over Georgia on November 24. The s.Oliver Wurzburg star drilled 9 of 16 shots from the floor in that contest, including 3 of 4 from behind the arc.

FC Bayern Munich center Maik Zirbes provided 17 points inside. Youngster Isaiah Hartenstein of NBA G-League side Rio Grande Valley Vipers and FC Bayern's Danilo Barthel excelled on the boards, corralling 10 and 8 rebounds, respectively.

"In this qualification, every game is incredibly important, because the results are taken into the Second Round," Rodl said. "We will fight until the end and want to use our strengths."
