Which is the better East Africa team, Rwanda or Uganda?

BAMAKO (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers) - Sunday's Group B game between Uganda and Rwanda for the first-leg of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 African Qualifiers in Bamako, Mali, could answer the most frequently asked question in the East Africa region.

For years, Rwanda dominated the game in that part of the continent, which resulted in four straight participations at FIBA AfroBasket in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013. And as a result, the Rwandans became the undisputed basketball rulers there.

However, there has been a turn of events over the last four years with Uganda registering impressive results.

So, which is the better East Africa team, Rwanda or Uganda?

Figures suggest that these two teams present more similarities than differences.

So much so that Rwanda and Uganda currently sit 15th and 16th respectively in the FIBA World (Africa) Ranking Presented by Nike.

As they prepare for yet another battle on Sunday, FIBA.basketball brings you some facts that might contribute to the ongoing debate.

Uganda currently hold a 3-2 head-to-head advantage dating back to 2009.

Uganda have earned automatic qualification for the last two editions of FIBA Africa's premier basketball event.

The last time they faced off for the FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers 2017 in Cairo, Uganda got the better of Rwanda 77-64, and as a result, secured automatic qualification for the Finals co-hosted by Senegal and Tunisia, although Rwanda benefited from a FIBA Africa wild card to join the 16-team event.

While Rwanda head to Sunday's matchup against Uganda with a 1-1 record thanks to a historic win over hosts Mali on Friday, which was followed by a defeat against Nigeria, the latter have conceded all their two games so far.

Although Uganda averaged 81 points in their first two games against Rwanda's 63.5 points, Uganda gave up 90.5 points per contest while Rwanda conceded 89 points per game.

And, one fundamental factor is that Uganda tend to share the ball slightly better with an average of 15.5 assists per game against Rwanda's 12.
