Moujaes concentrates on Lebanese defense

AMMAN (WABA Championship) - New Lebanon coach Joe Moujaes tasted victory in his first game at the helm with an 86-46 romp over Iraq at the WABA Championship but tougher challenges are coming up this week for the Cedars.

The Lebanese will face Asian powerhouse Iran on Tuesday before going up against WABA hosts Jordan on Wednesday.

"This was my first official game with the team, and only after a week of practices," Moujaes said. "I am focusing now only on team defense, which for sure will help us win games.

"At the other end of the court, we have many talents on board so our offensive balance is good."

"Fadi El Khatib is not only a good player, he is a great leader on and off the court, the team respects him greatly." - Moujaes

It helps Moujaes that the Asian basketball icon Fadi El Khatib is still involved with the national team. El Khatib, 38, had 16 points and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes of the big win over Iraq.

"Fadi El Khatib is not only a good player, he is a great leader on and off the court, the team respects him greatly," Moujaes said. "Our rising stars are always behind him (and ready) to learn from his leadership. The (El Khatib's) impact on the team is the key of our win."

Lebanon did not need any extra motivation ahead of this game. The sides had met at the last WABA Championship and Iraq had prevailed in that encounter.

"Iraq has size and speed," Moujaes said. "With (Kevin) Galloway leading them, it adds value to their squad.

"Last year in WABA, Lebanon lost their game with Iraq in overtime, so it's a revenge game for us. "It's not who is stronger or weaker, it is who's more eager to win."
