Big third quarter enough for Korea, Iran and other favourites roll on Day 1

TEHRAN (2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship) - A big third quarter was enough for Korea to roll to a Day 1 victory over Japan while hosts Iran and the other favourites eased to comfortable wins as the 2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship tipped off. 

Korea led 37-29 at half time but then out-scored Japan 35-9 in the third quarter and eased to a 92-72 triumph in Group B. Shin Minsuk nailed five three-pointers and tallied 24 points while Yang Jae Min hit for 19 points and Han Seunghui chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds. 

The other two games in Group B saw blowouts. Hosts Iran blasted Indonesia 106-40 as Mohammad Jafari collected 21 points and 9 nine rebounds to lead six players in double figures. Lebanon meanwhile brushed aside Kazakhstan 97-37 in the tournament opener with Salim Alaaeddine scoring 23 points and Mark Alkhoury collecting 18 points and 13 rebounds.

In Group B, Chinese Taipei ended up breezing past Philippines 88-74 as Kao Kuo-Hao and Ting Sheng-Ju both picked up 16 points and Tseng Hsiang-Chen had 9 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks. 

The reigning champions China were never threatened in a 93-28 victory over Iraq with Liu Zeyi (16 points), Fan Ziming (14) and Wang Zixu (13) combining for 43 points while hitting 73 percent from the field.

The closest game of Day 1 was also the highest scoring one as India out-lasted Thailand 100-93. Sahil scored 25 points to go with 8 rebounds while Baladhaneshwar Poiyamozhi had 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Vishal Kumar Gupta collected 16 points and 14 rebounds. Justin Bassey paced Thailand with 20 points in the loss.
