Brazil stays undefeated in group play after convincing win against Colombia

RECIFE (Brazil) – One of the most dominant teams in the competition found their way to the win column for a second time as Brazil defeated Uruguay 100-60 to move to 2-0 in Group A of the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup.

After the two teams were tied at 22 points each in the dying second of the first quarter, a Lucas Mariano triple gave Brazil the lead that they would sustain for the rest of the game as they led Colombia by as many as 41 points in their dominant win.

A 16-0 run for Brazil to end the second quarter and begin the third quarter helped them create a sustainable lead in the game, but it was the defensive rebounding efforts of Yago Santos and Augusto Lima that gave Brazil the edge to control the game as they kept Colombia to just 8 second chance baskets.

Despite the deficit, Colombia still had offensive efforts from Jaime Echenique and Tonny Trocha to keep their game alive, with Trocha hitting five triples in the game shooting 83 percent from beyond the arc which Brazil had no answer to.

But what Brazil did have is one of the deeper teams in the AmeriCup, and with six players scoring eight or more points in the game compared to just three for Colombia, they were able to tip in a massive 62 points off the bench.

Their defense is also one of the most disruptive and stealthy to play against, proven by their 11 steals in the game for 20 fast break points.

Lucas Dias and Santos both finished with 14 points for Brazil, while George De Paula added 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists as Brazil could not be stopped around the perimeter.

While not all Colombian players made baskets, their impact was felt like Hansel Atencia’s 7 points, but it was Trocha and Echenique combining for 30 of Colombia’s 60 points as the only two players to shoot above 40 percent in the game.

Juan Tello added 9 points for Colombia in the loss while Mariano added 12 points and 2 steals to seal the win for Brazil.
