Peavy's performances open the door again to Puerto Rico national team

SAN JUAN (FIBA AmeriCup 2017) - Nathan Peavy has been playing so well in Puerto Rico of late following his return from injury that he's getting a national team recall.

The 32-year-old last featured for the Boricuas at the 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Caracas, Venezuela. He was set to play for Alba Berlin the ensuing domestic campaign in Europe but tore an ACL before the start of the regular season.

I'm happy that I've been able to stay healthy. I'm not really surprised with my performance. I've worked very hard all these years to be here again. PeavyPeavy

After two knee surgeries and various problems with his recovery, Peavy is finally playing again in the Puerto Rican BSN this season. He's impressed, too, for Cariduros de Fajardo.

"We are extremely interested in Peavy," said Puerto Rico Basketball Federation president Yum Ramos to Primerahora.com. "I talked to him at a game this season and he said he felt good about health. I have seen him play and I have noticed that he is continuing to get into rhythm."

Peavy will be in the preliminary squad and have a chance to make the final roster for the FIBA AmeriCup, which starts August 25. There is also the possibility that Peavy will play for Puerto Rico when they compete in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers, starting in November.

"I feel incredibly happy," Peavy said. "I'm happy that I've been able to stay healthy. I'm not really surprised with my performance. I've worked very hard all these years to be here again. I feel very comfortable in this team. It's an honor to be here again."

Peavy's career had been taking off at the time of his injury. He logged big minutes for the Puerto Ricans at the OQT and averaged 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds. Four years out of the game has not been the end of his career.

Ramos' assessment is important but even more so is that of national team coach Eddie Casiano.

"Eddie Casiano is also monitoring him," Ramos said.
