Day 2: Mexico is the first Semi-Finalist

MEDELLIN (FIBA AmeriCup 2017) – Mexico added its second win in Group A and earned a trip to the Semi-Finals of the FIBA AmeriCup 2017.

Mexico stepped closer to the Semi-Finals qualification with a dominant 99-76 win over Brazil. Led offensively by 17 points from Lorenzo Mata and Francisco Cruz respectively, the Mexicans won all the quarters and took a comfortable lead on the scoreboard. Brazil faded away from the court, with internal problems that resulted in the absence of Caboclo on the second half of the game. Mexico shot for a 57% from the field and their defense produced 12 steals and 19 turnovers. Leo Meindl led the scoring for the Brazilians with 19 points.

Puerto Rico leveled its record at one, after a 91-72 win over the host Colombia. After finishing the first quarter tied, the Puerto Ricans escaped to an 11-point lead with a versatile offensive with 55% from the field and 14 scored shots from three-point land. Carlos Rivera led the scoring for the Boricuas with 15 points. For the host, Michael Jackson led the score with 20 points.

Tomorrow on the last day of Group A, Mexico will face Colombia and Puerto Rico will take on Brazil. Meanwhile, Group B will jump into action, when Virgin Islands faces Canada and defending champions Venezuela faces the host, Argentina.
