Nigelec brush ASPAC aside to join AS Police, SOA, SLAC to advance to Elite 16 of BAL

CONAKRY (Guinea) - It was a day of resurgence for AS Nigelec as the team rose from their opening day's defeat and posted a commanding performance on Sunday over ASPAC of Benin Republic 65-35 in their second game but only win of Group B.

It was AS Nigelec's only win in Group B in Division West of the Road to Basketball Africa League (BAL) 2022 but it was enough to earn them a ticket to the Elite 16 Round of the BAL with three points in two games just behind leaders SOA  with four points from two wins out of two games.

The Nigerien champions defeated the champions of Benin 65-35 in the one-sided game.

ASPAC were a shadow of themselves and that gave room for Nigelec to find a good rhythm throughout the contest.

Nigelec's forward Godwin David put up a man-of-game performance as he contributed 17 points for his side.

Abdoul Aziz Mounkaila Tahirou added 12 points just as Mahamadou Seydou Moussa scored 10 points to ensure that they left ASPAC with a wide margin to contend with.

ASPAC players were more or less left flat-footed making turnovers that turned into an advantage for their opponent. Worst still, they were not scoring. It was a day in which everything went wrong for them.

Only four players on the ASPAC team could muster to score at least 6 points apiece. They are namely Fadayilou Alassane, Tawadioun Baboni Mama, Tankpinou Moussiliou Ahivohzin and Ameh Eric Ejeh. However, their efforts were like a drop of water in the sea.

In the second game of the day, AS Police of Mali made up for their Game Day 1 loss by defeating SLAC 80-72 points in a game that brought out the best from both sides as they claimed the tickets in Group A.

It was Stephane Kanoute who put his legs firm on the pedals for AS Police draining 23 points in the game to lead the floor. Kounate's teammates Abdramane Camara and Benke Diarouma added 15 and 19 points respectively.

On the part of SLAC, mention must be made of the efforts of American Michael D'Souza Poole who scored 22 points and Omotayo Jordan Ogundiran who contributed 13 points.

The game started at a fast pace with AS Police showing that they were out for business and proving that SLAC's win before now was a flash in the pan. The Mali champions led in the first quarter 25-15 and came into the second quarter believing that they had control of the game but SLAC proved otherwise to post 18-15 for a half-time score of 37-33 in favor of Police.

On resumption of the third quarter AS Police pulled away with a score of 25-13 and just when it looked like Police would have an easy ride, SLAC playing before their home fans stepped up the pressure on Police to take the last quarter at 18-26 but the resurgence came late to change the tide of the game.
