Smouha SC's stellar campaign continues after beating Al Ahly

CAIRO (Egypt) - Smouah Sporting Club caused a huge upset on Sunday after beating Al Ahly 91-82 in Cairo as their FIBA Africa Basketball League 2019 's stellar campaign continues.

In a contest that recorded 13 lead changes, Adamu Saaka became the game-changer finishing with a team-high 26 points to help Smouha SC extend their Africa Basketball League 2019 record to a 4-0 ahead of the second-leg next month in Alexandria.

After finishing with just nine points in the first half, the Ghanaian guard kept his best for later in the game when Smouha needed him most. James Justice Jr and Ahmed Farag combined for 33 points for the Alexandria-based side, who boosted their chances of reaching the FINAL FOUR in May.

Talking to FIBA.basketball in the aftermath of the game, Saaka said: "I am happy about the win, but I know we can play better. We have one more stage to go against them. We are going to celebrate today, but we need to refocus, and think how we are going to attack them next game and try to advance to the Final Four."

And although Todd O'Brien recorded his third double-double (26 points and 14 rebounds) and Quddus Bello added 16 points for Al Ahly, the Egyptian champions dropped their mark to 2-2.

It's Al Ahly's second home defeat after losing to Angolan side Primeiro D'Agosto in the 2019 Africa Basketball League

The defeat means the 2016 African champions will need to beat Smouah SC by ten points or more in the second-leg to maintain their aspirations of a FINAL FOUR berth.
