Egyptian twins reveal career ambitions beyond basketball

CAIRO (Egypt) - It is not uncommon to see siblings feature for teams in major sporting events. Some find themselves on opposing teams but in the case of the Egyptian twins Maya and Jana Ahmed, they play on the same side.

Twin sisters have won the hearts of spectators with their performances at the ongoing FIBA U16 Women's African Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

The twins who are part of the Egypt team told FIBA.basketball that they are excited to be on the team and contribute their quota.

"We tried many sports but we got attracted to basketball, we want to be great players," Jana said.

The girls are into the game of basketball despite either of their parents being around the game says it's a special feeling for them to be representing their nation.

"Yes, we feel that we are so special to be in the national team and we are glad to represent our country in the [African] Championship."

Maya Ahmed plays as a small forward while her twin is a power forward.

Both players noted that their outlook is for Egypt to qualify to the final and win the trophy. "It is also our wish to be the best players in our positions in this championship."

They revealed that they also felt very proud of themselves when they were picked to represent Egypt.

Jana, who is five minutes older than Maya explains why they chose the game of basketball over other sports.

"The reason why we are attracted to the game of basketball is that it is a team game and it needs a mixture of strength, speed, and sense because it is an interesting and entertaining game that has the spirit of competition to the last minute."

 

Speaking on how they find time for practice and studies, Maya says: "Through an organized schedule, we organize our times to find time for training, studying and rest. That way, we can balance between studying and sports."

Outside their basketball careers, Maya says she wants to be an engineer while Jana wants to be a doctor.
