CHN/USA - Griner dunk-fest lights up WCBA All-Star game

BEIJING (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Brittney Griner showed why fans around the globe would love to see her make a debut for USA at the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women after stealing the show at the WCBA All-Star game.

The 23-year-old flushed down a quartet of spectacular two-handed jams in an entertaining dunk clinic on her way to leading the Southern All-Star Team to a 107-95 victory over their rivals from the north.

Griner illuminated one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the Chinese basketball calendar with a near double-double of 25 points and nine rebounds to take the MVP award and also managed to raise plenty of money for local children due with her dunking exploits.

And, she wasn't the only player with a potential trip to Turkey who made an impression.

Indeed it was her All-Star team-mate and fellow American Sylvia Fowles who also shone brightly, adding 20 points for the winning side who had pulled clear after a first half which had daylight between the rivals.

Having missed the All-Star game last season with an injury, Maya Moore stepped out this time, although she wasn't able to show the kind of touch which resulted in her being the WCBA 2012-13 MVP.

She managed 10 points and handed out a game-high eight assists, but was stone cold from long-range and that didn't help the Northern All-Stars in their quest for victory.

Opals center Elizabeth Cambage already knows what it is like to dunk at a major global tournament and she harvested 18 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The crowd also revelled in seeing home grown stars too, not least fans' favourite Yanyan Ji who is nicknamed the 'female Kobe' and she added 13 points alongside Cambage and Moore.

Two other Chinese national team stars got to taste a win for the South in the shape of Xiaojia Chen and Mengran Sun, as they shared 25 points.

Rising star Li Gong, who played at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women last year, was crowned champion of the three-point shootout.

However, there is no time whatsoever for the array of WCBA stars to rest on their laurels, since the end of season play-offs are already underway.
