Participants at #FIBAU19 in Bangkok benefit from Players' Workshop

BANGKOK (Thailand) - After some exciting action on the court, participants of the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup enjoyed a special Players' Workshop hosted by Jenni Screen and Raffaella Masciadri.

All 16 nations participated in the event, which witnessed a mixture of important messages around key future career topics, mixed with a strong emphasis on friendship and the players having great fun.

In between the ice-breakers, singing, dancing and general bonding between all the players at the sessions, Screen and Masciadri hit the key notes in respect of advising the participants on issues around agents, the importance of obtaining legal and financial advice, learning languages, getting an education, diversifying wherever possible and planning for the future. The initiative is part of a broader body of work being undertaken by the FIBA Players' Commission.

Italian legend Masciadri recently retired after a stellar career for her country and several clubs, which saw her shine in EuroLeague Women and spend three seasons in the WNBA. Multi-Olympian Screen also spoke about her decorated career and was able to show the players her playing medals.

"The workshops are important because it allows players to understand what is necessary if they are looking to take the next step in their respective basketball careers," stated Screen.

"But, it is also a great opportunity to interact with other players away from the competitive environment of the basketball court. The players are able to embrace each other as young aspiring women and have some fun while also learning."

Masciadri added: "We want to make sure they players are all able to get involved and can share this experience together and have fun - something which guarantees they can take something positive away.

"We are trying to help prepare them a little for life in general, because some of the advice is not only relating to players becoming professional."

The event was also attended by FIBA President Horacio Muratore and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, with the latter stating: "These player workshop events are very important as part of the program for the Players' Commission of FIBA.

"We are very happy to have two not only excellent and great players of the past in Jenni and Raffaella, but also two players who are very good communicators. They translated to the participants all the values of our sport and at the same time, this important advice for their careers in the future.

"I was thrilled to attend the workshop and see the energy in the room, as well as the interaction and interest from the girls. They all came ready to absorb the information and advice.

"We will continue investing this experience, know-how and values from generation to generation, because at events like this one, we are shaping the future of not only FIBA, but basketball worldwide," concluded Zagklis.
