Day 2: Fournier throws down a dunk and hosts Hungary hit top gear

DEBRECEN (Hungary) - There were plenty of Day 2 talking points at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup, including a big slam dunk from Toby Lee Fournier and hosts Hungary rolling strong.

The performance, the dunk

Toby Lee Fournier posted the performance of the competition so far as she came up with a breathtaking line of 32 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steald for Canada as they got off the mark with a 92-58 victory against Korea. There was also a very nice cameo from Cassandre Prosper who added 15 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. But the big talking point was the dunk. Ther rarest of plays in the female game - let alone at a FIBA youth competition.ย

Happiness at home

Hungary had that winning feeling at the second attempt

Having not been able to get off to a winning start in their opener, Hungary served up a treat for the home fans on their second apperance with an excellent 79-55 victory against Japan. Rampant on the boards, Hungary controlled the glass and prospered
from another nice show from Petra Toman who had 23 points, while Edina Strausz posted an all-action 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Has a dark horse debutante emerged?

With a perfect 2 wins from 2 games, Germany are enjoying their inaugural U17 tournament

Germany have enjoyed their first steps at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup and may be about to prove themselves as a dark horse in the competition. Building on their historic win against New Zealand, it was more of the same as they made it 2 wins in as many games with a defensively dominant 55-44 success against Mali. Mailien Rolf was exceptional again with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

The reality check

Slovenia grabbed a big chunk of the limelight after their epic overtime success on their debut in the competiton against Australia. However, their second outing served up a major reality check after they were taken apartย 93-56 in Group B by France. A slow start didn't help, with France terrific from downtown and making 8 of 15. Tea Cleante was also a huge factor, amassing 19 points, while Ramouna Vitta also shot the ball brilliantly for her 14 points.

Eyes towards the podium

ย Spain stayed perfect as they powered their way to an 86-48 win against Egypt. Awa Fam Thiam showed why she has played EuroCup Women with Valencia this past season by adding 16 points and 8 rebounds. Meanwhile USA shrugged off a slow start against New Zealand to get it done 102-34 as Hannah Hildalgo top scored with 16 points.

That feeling of relief

Jessica Petrie had an impressive showing for Australia as they got rolling with a first win

Australia recorded their first win of the competition by striding past Argentina 66-44 in Group B. After an unconvincing first half, the Sapphires stepped on the gas after the break and eased out of sight behind 10 points and 11 boards from Isla Juffermans, with teammate Jessica Petrie matching the feat with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Belgium also got rolling by beating Mexico 92-43 as Kyra Bruyndoncx netted 20 points.
