BEIJING (FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2018) - It's been a whirlwind rise to prominence for Shao Ting during the past five years or so and now she is ready to lead as captain when China hit the hardwood at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018.

It is a competition that will always hold special significance for the forward, since it offered her the first chance to shine on a global platform at the senior level.

Back in Istanbul four years ago, China finished in an encouraging sixth spot and it was Ting at the heart of their impressive campaign, announcing her arrival among the elite with more than 12 points and 3 rebounds per game.

Fast-forward to the 2018 edition and things have changed massively - not only for the player herself, but also the team. Ting now finds herself as an Olympian and a veteran ahead of time in the wake of constant roster churn. Meanwhile her new role as captain means she has much more to think about than points production or going to work on the glass.

She explained: "My greater responsibility is to follow the guidance and to lead young players to a breakthrough - as well as achieving good results in the international arena.

"The age of the team may be uneven, but everyone is very energetic. They all come here for the basketball dream. They also make special efforts. The young players bring vitality and have a strong learning ability and can make great progress.

"As an older player now, I have experienced the last Olympic cycle. During my own growing up [as a player], the coach gave me a lot of cultivation and help, so I would like to pass on my experience to the young players who can learn from me.

"I have something to offer for everyone," added Ting.

China will play Latvia, Senegal and reigning champions, USA during the first stage of the tournament in Tenerife.
