Unstoppable Kenya prove too much for South Sudan, Egypt bounce back

 

KAMPALA (Uganda) - FIBA Africa Zone reigning champions Kenya continued their surge in the FIBA Women's AfroBasket Qualifiers on the day Egypt bounced back after a heartbroken loss to Uganda. 

when they hit South Sudan 80-51 at the MTN Arena Lugogo, for their third successive victory.

KEN YA  SOUTH SUDAN  (80-51) 3-0

Kenya dismissed South Sudan 80-51 in the regional qualifier to improve to maintain their unbeaten run and bolster their chances to fight for a place in the 2023 Women's AfroBasket. 

The win pushed Kenya’s record to 3-0 with a key match against Egypt Saturday.

South Sudan who completed their fixtures are 1-3. Kenya have 6 points, Uganda 5, Egypt 5, South Sudan 5 and winless Rwanda with  3.

Kenya  took a 2-0 lead on a basket by Rose Ouma as they a took an early grip on the proceedings taking a 21-15 first quarter advantage.

South Sudanese led by Adut Bulgak, Nyamuoch Pior and Achiel Tac battled to contain Kenya took a 36-25 lead at half time.

When the Victoria Reynolds and the trio of Wanyama, Christine Akinyi and  captain Melissa Akinyi pressure after the break, the South Sudanese faltered.

Reynolds, Wanyama and Christine had rolled up 30 points for Kenya who  producing their best performance so far

Baskets by Rose Ouma and Medina Okot  gave Kenya a 20 point cushion at 65-45 and when South Sudanese inspirational player Bulgak pulled out with an injury they faltered as they could not cope with Kenya offensive difficulties.

A Ouma score made it 77-47 before debutant Rachael Odhiambo completed the show with a pointer.

Reynolds was Kenya’s top performer with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assist and four steals. Christine 17 pts, Wanyama 17 and Medina Okot 11.

South Sudan Bulgak was key before she limped out as she had picked up 10 points hauled 16 rebounds, gave 3 assist and had 1 steal.

EGYPT v RWANDA (102-56) 

Egypt thrashed Rwanda 102-56 to become the first team to notch a century points in the FIBA AfroBasket Zone 5 qualifiers.

Rwandese opened the scoring against Egypt but it was a brief affair as a three pointer by Nadine Mohamed overturned that early advantage as the winners went on to take a 26-14 advantage at the end of the opening quarter

Egypt went up 16-5 as Rwanda called a time to stem the tide. Nothing changed as Egypt sailed away with a quick response on a fast break as the scores read 26-14 at the end of the first quarter on a Soraia Deghady points.

It was the same story in the second quarter with as the irrepressibly Deghady at the heart of every move. She made the scores 32-17, connecting on a steal as Egypt roared away to a 40-25 cushion.

Radwa Sheriff trey saw the Pharaohs stretch their lead going to the breather with a strong 50-25 advantage. On resumption, the scores swelled to 64-32 and the Rwandese collapsed despite spirited efforts by Odille Tetero and Assouma Uwizeye.

Egypt kept their tempo as speedy Reem Moussa twice drove inside hitting  four successive points as Egypt took the third quarter with a 27-13 score line.

The bombardment continued and a three pointer by Raneem Elgedawy gave them a 30 point margin at 77-37 as the third stanza ended.

Clearly targeting the first 100 points, Egypt got off furiously in the deciding quarter and inside one minutes of play, they were up 82-44 edge on a Souraya shot. Radwa Sherif iced the proceedings from the line hitting the century mark.

Radwa Sherif  grabbed  18 points, had 12 rebounds and dished six assists. Soraya shot 17, Asraf Bakr nailed 12 as Sayed Saliman and Elgedawy each shot 11.

Leading the Rwanda charge was Assouma Uwizeye with 15, with seven rebounds and seven as Tetero and Sandrine Mushikiwabo recorded 10 a piece.
