Mashayekhi steadies ship, steers ZobAhan toward back-to-back wins

TEHRAN (Iran) - ZobAhan showed poise in sailing through rough seas to get past the gritty Orthodox Amman, 89-81, for their second straight win in WASL-West Asia, Thursday night at the Azadi Basketball Hall in Tehran.

Sajjad Mashayekhi proved to be the stabilizing presence the home team needed in the fourth quarter to ward off the visiting team, who got to within just a point after trailing by as many as 16 points during the third chapter.

The Iranian side has now captured solo second in Group A with a 2-1 card after dealing Orthodox Amman their second loss in a row.

Game heroes: Arman Zangeneh top-scored for the winners with 25 points.

Mashayekhi finished with 24 points, 11 of which he fired in the final period as he provided apt responses to the opposition's rally led by Freddy Ibrahim. The veteran guard shot 50-percent and also tallied 4 assists and 2 steals.

But it wasn't all him alone that made the victory possible as he also received help from the likes of Farid Abadi and Mahammad Akbari.

Abadi fired 18 points. Akbari chimed in 6 markers, which he both made from deep and in successive fashion to give his side an 85-75 lead with 4:31 left to play before making stops on the other end to help neutralize Orthodox Amman's comeback bid.

STEP AHEAD Player of the Game: Arsalan Kazemi was voted STEP AHEAD Player of the Game by the fans as he made his presence felt in the win after filling up the stat sheet with 6 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, and 1 block.

Turning point: ZobAhan actually trailed during the second quarter until Zangeneh, Mashayekhi, and Kazemi led an 8-3 rally to enter the break in their favor, 46-43, and they would stay in the lead all the way.

Stats don't lie: ZobAhan shot 51-percent of their field goals thanks to 24 assists, and also defended well as they forced Orthodox Amman to 19 turnovers, which led to 26 points.

They said: "We have too much motivation for this game because after two games, we played Orthodox Amman. They are a good team. We tried to achieve our focus for 40 minutes. Sometimes we lost our focus, but totally happy to win the game at the end." - Mahammad Akbari, ZobAhan

"The most important thing in WASL is to maintain concentration all over the game. I think my players had their concentration most of the time through out this game and I think that is the main reason we won." - Farzad Kouhian, Head Coach, ZobAhan

"Tough, tough loss. But there's some positive things that came out in this game. We didn't start off amazingly, they got on a good lead. But the fact that we came back and stayed with them and made it a good game throughout the whole game, that means that we're resilient. No one knows this but us but this is our first time playing as a full team. As this is a loss for us, there's a lot of good things to come out with this. Moving forward we should be able to get better." - Freddy Ibrahim, Orthodox Amman
