Spain make it six Olympic Games appearances with Paris 2024 place

SOPRON (Hungary) - Spain have successfully qualified for Paris 2024 ahead of stepping out for their final group game at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2024 in Sopron.

Spain's victory over Canada during the second game of the tournament turned out to be decisive for the qualification.

A win for Japan against Canada sent Spain through to the Games, ahead of their matchup against host nation Hungary

Now, the pivotal question arises: Will Spain be back to being a force to be reckoned with when the action gets underway later this year?

Spain Women's National Team Olympic history:

Appearances: 5- 1992 (5th); 2004 (6th); 2008 (5th); 2016 (2nd); 2020 (6th)
Medals: 🥈(2016)

Spain will get to play at their sixth Olympic Games and it means they are back participating at a major global event, having surprisingly missed the previous one when they did not qualify for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.

They first appeared as host nation at the Barcelona Games of 1992 and this will be the first time in their history that they have played at a third consecutive edition.

Having never finished outside of the top six at the Olympics, they made history at Rio 2016 when they took their first ever podium place as they secured a maiden appearance in the title game itself.
