Olympic debutantes Serbia stun Australia to reach Semi-Finals
RIO DE JANEIRO (Rio 2016 Olympic Games) - Serbia pulled off the biggest upset of the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament so far by beating Australia, 73-71, on Tuesday at Carioca Arena 1 to reach the Semi-Finals.
The European champions, who are competing at the Olympics for the very first time, will face the winners of the Quarter-Final between Turkey and Spain in Thursday's Semi-Finals.
The defeat prevented the Opals from reaching the Last Four of the competition for a sixth consecutive time.
There was little to separate both teams in a thrilling contest that saw 13 lead changes and 10 ties. The score was knotted at 20-20 to end the first quarter, before Australia took a 37-35 edge at halftime and were up by the slimmest of margins, 52-51, heading into the final frame.
Serbia's Jelena Milovanovic, Sonja Petrovic and Ana Dabovic stepped up to score down the stretch, doing enough collectively to overcome a 29-point performance by Liz Cambage.
Turning Point: After Cambage put Australia up 67-66 with 2:01 left to play, Milovanovic and Petrovic each drove to the hoop for a 70-67 advantage with 1:01 remaining. Cambage scored twice in the paint in the final minute but Dabovic made a basket of her own and hit the second of two free-throws for a 73-71 with 10.2 seconds and Australia were unable to get a clean shot on the last possession.
Stats Don't Lie: Serbia scored 27 points off of Australia's 26 turnovers.
Hero: The members of Serbia's 'unofficial Big 3' are all deserving. Petrovic injured her shoulder at the end of the first half, had it taped up during the break and returned for the second half. Her basket with just over a minute to go proved crucial. Milovanovic showed no fear and was in attack mode throughout the game. Dabovic kept her cool and composure to score those three points in the final 60 seconds that secured the win.
Bottom Line: Who would have thought a few days ago, when Serbia were down 0-3 in Group B, that they would bounce back and make it to the Semi-Finals? If no one else, they certainly did.
